DETAILS OF THE PROJECT IN ROMANIA

Its protection through Natural 2000 network and agro-environmental measure allow the preservation of its importance from a naturalist point of view but also from a social point of view by the recognition and support of its inhabitants. Indeed, farmers are rewarded on these land for doing traditional and respectful farming. It really important because high biodiversity in this region has been created with this management. Traditional farming practices have diversified habitats, which led to the increase of biodiversity.

This place is fantastic for many reasons:

  • A landscapes which trend to disappear

  • Agriculture and biodiversity conciliation

  • A reserve which own the most extensive flower-rich grassland remaining in lowland Europe

  • An astonished flowers diversity, escorted with its butterflies

  • The largest population of brown bears found anywhere in Europe

Presentation of the site

The Tarnava Mare Natura 2000 region is located in Transylvania in Romania. It is considered as a particular interest because it is composed of 85 000 ha of rich and rare landscapes. It is one of the last medieval landscapes of Europe by its aspect and use (forested ridges and gullies, pasture and hay meadows on gentler slopes and terraces, arable and smaller meadows on the flat valley bottoms near villages).

My involvement in this survey

1- The Wallacea expedition

Who they are:

Objective:

I will participate to the annual biodiversity survey through the organisation Wallacea which will allow me to follow and help scientists in their study on the field. My expedition takes place from the 13th July to the 9th August. This expedition will bring me another point of view of how we can manage the land planning system in order to make less impact on the environment and also how the conservation of habitats and species is undertaken. It will be useful for my next study year because I will attend a Master in ecology and countryside planning in France.

Missions and aims:

The aim of this expedition is the realization of biodiversity records in order to show the effectiveness of maintaining traditional farming and see if any changes in species communities happened. Many biodiversity record will be done: large mammals, small mammals and herpetofauna, birds, butterflies and bats. But also, farms will be inspected in order to record the numbers of livestock, dates of grassland cutting, type of arable crops. Hence, this expedition will be not only a naturalist record but it will have also a social aspect. The traditional farming methods used in this region plays a crucial role in the maintenance of high biodiversity. By assessing the effectiveness of maintaining the traditional farming practices in protecting this outstanding area, it will participate to the maintenance of funds that farmers receive for their friendly environmentally farming practices.

This project lasts 1 month. The first week will be spent as classes in order to give me skills to recognize species of the reserve. Then during the 3 last weeks, I will join a small team which will move from remote village to village across the region. Each village is nestled in one of many valleys running North to South, and so after completing surveys for four or five days in each village the team will trek up the side of the adjacent valley and down into the next one.

A report of this expedition will be published next year by the scientists I helped. Also I will write a little article at the end of the expedition to explain what I will have done during this expedition and also to say how I will feel in this foreign country, what this experience will have brought me to my personal development.

2- The photographic project

Photography is one my passion. I have undertaken since a long time a portfolio to capture the relation among man and his environment. You can find some of my photos in the portfolio part of this website. This travel in Romania will allow me to finish this portfolio. At the end of this expedition, a book of photos will be realised. I will stay a little longer (14th of August) than the expedition end because I don't know if I will have enough free time with records to finish my photo work. Moreover it will allow me to visit another places which may turn out to be an unquestionalble value for the realization of this portfolio.

Funding of the expedition:

To participate to this project, I have to finance it also. Here is the financial statement:

£1000 can be financed by my personal economy and £1000 other may be financed on a participatory website. I am relying on you ! :)

Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities, who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research programmes. These expeditions are designed with specific wildlife conservation aims in mind – from identifying areas needing protection, through to implementing and assessing conservation management programmes.
